Academic Mission

Children’s Hospital at Erlanger

  • Children’s Hospital at Erlanger is designated by the state of Tennessee as a Comprehensive Regional Pediatric Center (CRPC), providing the highest level of medical and trauma care for children.
  • Children’s Hospital at Erlanger operates the region’s only pediatric emergency department, pediatric intensive care unit (PICU), and tertiary care Level IV neonatal ICU providing the highest level of care to premature and sick infants.
  • Children’s Hospital at Erlanger offers 35 pediatric subspecialties.
  • More than 3,500 children were admitted to Children’s Hospital at Erlanger, and 39,099 patients were treated through its emergency department during fiscal year 2019-2020.
  • Kennedy Outpatient Center
    • Opened December 2018 the 90,000 sq ft outpatient center includes more than 20 pediatric subspecialties
    • Architecture inspired by the unique architecture and geography of the region.
    • Digital high contrast imaging capable of capturing full body weight bearing images with significantly lower radiation than traditional radiographs.

Pre-Hospital Care and Trauma Medicine

  • Erlanger operates the region’s only Level I Trauma Center,  trauma and general surgeons onsite 24/7 providing the highest level of care for critically ill or traumatically injured patients.
  • Erlanger is the region’s only health system with seven emergency departments, providing 24/7 emergency care: Erlanger Baroness (downtown), Children’s Hospital, Erlanger East Hospital, Erlanger North Hospital, Erlanger Bledsoe Hospital, Erlanger Western Carolina Hospital, and Erlanger Sequatchie Valley Emergency Room.
  • Erlanger is the region's only health system with LIFE FORCE Air Medical - six air ambulances covering a 125-mile radius. Each aircraft – four EC-135/H135s and two Bell 407s – is staffed by a critical-care certified flight crew and is equipped to provide life-saving transfusions and surgical procedures in the air. LIFE FORCE transported 2,357 patients in fiscal year 2019-2020.
  • The Erlanger Regional Operations Center (EROC), located at Baroness Hospital, serves as a nerve center, communicating and coordinating pre-hospital and emergency response across a 50,000-square-mile region for an average of 37,000 patients a year.



  • The Erlanger Orthopaedic Institute is the region’s only academic orthopedic program serving adults and children.
  • Erlanger’s fellowship-trained orthopaedic surgeons provide coverage for the health system’s Level I Trauma Center.
  • Erlanger offers the region’s only multi-specialty sports medicine program run by physicians who provide sports medicine coverage for many regional sports teams.
  • The Erlanger Orthopaedic Institute offers the region’s most comprehensive joint replacement program, shoulder repair center, and foot and ankle care.

Critical/Intensive Care

  • Erlanger is the only healthcare system in the region with ten Intensive Care Units (ICUs): Cardiac-Vascular ICU, Cardiac Surgery ICU, Medical ICU, West ICU, Neonatal ICU, Neuro Trauma ICU, Neuroscience ICU, Pediatric ICU, Shock-Trauma ICU and Surgical ICU, as well as the Erlanger East ICU.

Surgical Services

  • Surgical Services, inpatient and outpatient, are offered at the Erlanger Baroness, Erlanger East, Erlanger Western Carolina Hospital, and Children’s Hospital.
  • Erlanger is the region's only health system with trauma and general surgeons on duty 24/7. 
  • Erlanger is equipped with more than 40 state-of-the-art surgical suites in four locations, including the region’s only custom-designed pediatric operating rooms at Children’s Hospital.
  • Erlanger offers the latest minimally invasive robotic surgical systems including the da Vinci Si and Xxi, which can dramatically reduce hospitalization and recovery times. 

Women’s Care and Childbirth

  • Erlanger is the first health system in the U.S. to offer a fellowship program in minimally invasive gynecological surgery (MIGS).
  • Erlanger is the only healthcare provider in the tri-state region with two labor and delivery programs.
  • Through Children’s Hospital, Erlanger offers the region’s first and only Level IV neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).
  • Erlanger is home to the region’s only high-risk perinatal unit for mothers who need to stay at the hospital for vital care in the weeks before delivery.
  • More than 4,000 patients a year visit the region’s only 24/7 OB emergency room at Erlanger Baroness Hospital.
  • Erlanger Baroness Hospital offers a Tertiary Level III Care Center for high-risk obstetrics as well as L/D services for low-risk patients.
  • Erlanger East Hospital offers maternity care for vaginal deliveries, surgical facilities for C-sections, and a Level IIA special care nursery.

Erlanger Cancer Institute

  • Erlanger is the only hospital in the region to be named an Academic Comprehensive Cancer Center by the American College of Surgeons.
  • The Erlanger Cancer Institute features genetics counseling to tailor targeted patient-specific therapies and the region’s most advanced genomic testing for each specific tumor.
  • As a major academic health system and through membership in the East Central Oncology Group, Erlanger features an extensive clinical research program, and offers a wide range of clinical trials.
  • Advanced technology in radiation oncology, includes the region’s only CyberKnife for painless treatment of cancerous tumors.
  • Community outreach programs and support services team include site-specific navigators, dietitian, social worker and chaplain.
  • Erlanger’s Center for Breast Health is accredited by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers, a program administered by the American College of Surgeons. 

Erlanger Heart and Lung Institute

  • The Erlanger Heart Institute is the region’s only academic cardiovascular program, teaching cardiology residents and fellows from around our region and across the country.
  • As a regional referral center for complex cardiovascular care, the Erlanger Heart Institute receives patients transferred from a four-state service area to receive specialized care and technology. 
  • Erlanger was the first Chest Pain Center in Tennessee, Georgia, or Alabama, sixth in the U.S. accredited by the Society of Chest Pain Centers and Providers and 16th in the U.S. to earn the highest level Accredited Chest Pain Center with PCI.
  • Erlanger is the region’s only center for Acute Myocardial Infarction (AMI) certified by the Joint Commission
  • Our cardiology team includes board-certified, fellowship-trained specialists in preventive cardiology, advanced cardiovascular imaging, electrophysiology, advanced heart failure, interventional cardiology, structural cardiology, pediatric cardiology (through Children’s Hospital at Erlanger) and sports cardiology


  • Erlanger Urology offers the region’s only academic urology program.
  • The program offers fellowship-level specialization in  robotically assisted kidney-sparing cancer surgery and bladder cancer surgery, microsurgical treatment of male reproductive issues, pediatric urology, women's urology, and bladder dysfunction/overactive bladder (OAB).
  • Erlanger Urology introduced intraoperative nerve monitoring robotic prostatectomy to our region, technology that reduces the risk of erectile dysfunction and urinary incontinence following prostate surgery.

Erlanger Behavioral Health

  • The 69,000 sq. ft. building opened in June 2018.
  • The hospital offers 88-beds and treats geriatrics to adolescents.

Erlanger Western Carolina Hospital

  • Facilities include a 25-bed critical access hospital as well as lab and radiology services, urgent care, and an athletic/rehabilitation center.
  • Has a 24/7 emergency department.
  • Offers over 20 specialty care services including cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation, and infusion therapy.
  • EWCH has 4 primary care locations with 13 providers, bringing more preventative care to the region.

  • Erlanger Medical Group, comprised of over 200 physicians and 56 practices/offices, offers care in specialties ranging from family medicine to fellowship trained cardiologists.
  • Erlanger has the region’s only kidney transplant program and offers less-invasive laparoscopic kidney removal.
  • Erlanger is home to the region’s first Wound Care Center, featuring Level I accredited hyperbaric treatment, is based at the Erlanger Baroness Hospital.
