Joseph Duff, MD
It is my pleasure to write a letter nominating Joe Duff from the Orthopedic Residency Program for this year’s Alpers Award. Dr. Duff is a 5th year chief in our Orthopedic Residency Program and exemplifies the humanistic qualities this award highlights. Dr Duff has been a leader in his time here as a resident to the point that I am personally recruiting him back to be a leader for the next generation of residents. He has served as the Director of Well-being ensuring all our residents find time for self-reflection and self-help. Joe has committed to serve on a medical mission trip this January with the non-profit group Faith in Practice where he will be representing our program helping those in need for Orthopedic care in Antigua, Guatemala. Dr. Duff is one who leads by example and this mission trip is just a small example of how he demonstrates his compassion, love and respect for anyone in need.
Saint Francis of Assisi stated that we should “preach the gospel at all times and when necessary, use words”. Joe Duff is quiet, but his kind gestures and humble caring is on display for all to see. Joe Duff walks the walks and leads by example. To give examples of the respect Joe Duff has earned from those in the hospital I have provided some quotes from ancillary staff at Erlanger accumulated over the last 2 years including; “Joe is very kind to the families, patients and staff; Very professional and punctual; treated every patient like they were his own personal patients; quietly goes about his work and is prepared, conscientious and pleasant to all; reliable, capable, professional and compassionate patient care.”
I am proud to nominate Dr. Joe Duff for the Alper Award. He demonstrates the “why” we all go into to medicine; to humbly serve and help all in need, which at times may be with his talents in the OR but more often a kind gesture of listening to your patient and just showing them how much, you care. Well-deserved nomination Dr. Duff, you make our program proud!
