What are the eligibility requirements for applying to the PGY1 Pharmacy Residency?

  • Completion of the Doctor of Pharmacy degree
  • Eligibility for Tennessee Licensure

What are the application requirements in PhORCAS?

  • Transcript from an accredited college of pharmacy
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Three letters of recommendation (Should speak to the applicant’s clinical skills and knowledge base; letters from a clinical rotation preceptor are preferred)
  • Letter of Intent

What information should be included in application letters of recommendation?

  • Letters of recommendation should include information describing the applicant’s clinical skill set and knowledge base, in addition to personal attributes.
  • Letters of recommendation from clinical pharmacy preceptors are preferred. Letters of recommendation from a critical care or emergency medicine pharmacy preceptor is preferred for applicants applying to the PGY2 Critical Care Residency.
  • Letters writers are not required to submit a separate letter of recommendation uploaded into Phorcas in addition to the standard Phorcas template

What is the salary and benefits a Pharmacy Resident can expect?

  • Annual stipend 
    • PGY1: $58,734
    • PGY2 Critical Care: $63,784.50
  • Paid time off (PTO): 20 days will be accrued which may be used for personal days, sick days, or professional interviews. At the end of the residency, any PTO time not used will be paid out to the resident at their hourly rate.
  • Educational leave to attend required conferences and meetings

Does Erlanger provide funding for required professional meeting attendance (ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting, Southeastern Residency Conference, etc.)?

Yes! Erlanger provides a travel allowance for ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting and the Southeastern Residency Conference (SERC) that covers travel, hotels, and an allowance for food. Erlanger also provides funding for the PGY2 Critical Care Resident to attend The Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM) Congress.

What technology and computer system is available to Pharmacy Residents?

  • Residents have dedicated office space equipped with a dual screen desktop and phone.
  • Residents are also issued laptops for use within the hospital system.
  • Access to Micromedex, Up to Date
  • Erlanger uses Epic for electronic health records (EHR)

What are the required PGY1 rotations?

What are the staffing requirements for Pharmacy residents?

  • PGY1 residents are required to provide staffing coverage every fourth weekend and one weeknight shift (4-8pm) per week. There is no call requirement.
  • The PGY2 Critical Care Resident is required to provide clinical staffing in the Emergency Department every 3rd weekend. There is no weeknight staffing or on call requirement. The resident will also provide clinical staffing for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

Are there teaching opportunities for Pharmacy Residents?

  • Yes! Erlanger pharmacists serve as preceptors for four colleges of pharmacy, so there are usually multiple students on rotation at Erlanger during a given month. Depending on the point in the residency year, PGY1 Residents may work alongside clinical preceptors to facilitate student learning or may serve as the primary preceptor for the student under clinical preceptor supervision.The PGY2 Critical Care Resident is required to precept at least 2 learners throughout the residency year. Additionally, the PGY2 will serve as a preceptor for a PGY1 resident on their nutrition support longitudinal rotation in addition to precepting all PGY1 residents on their longitudinal code blue experience.
