Erlanger Western Carolina Hospital provides diagnostic and interventional imaging for patients across Cherokee County and the surrounding mountain region. Radiologists chart the inside of the body and give physicians the insight they need to detect and diagnose disease. The radiology wing sits attached to the main hospital campus at 3990 East US 64 Alternate in Murphy, with a separate entrance and its own registration area.
Imaging Services at Erlanger Western Carolina Hospital
- Stereotactic Breast Biopsy. A minimally invasive, image-guided biopsy that uses mammography to pinpoint a suspicious area found on a screening mammogram. A radiologist removes a small tissue sample through a needle. No surgical incision and no general anesthesia are required, and most patients return to normal activity the next day.
- 3D Mammography (Digital Breast Tomosynthesis). Layer-by-layer breast imaging that finds smaller cancers and reduces callbacks compared with 2D mammography alone.
- Bone Densitometry (DEXA). Measures bone density to screen for osteoporosis and fracture risk.
- Interventional Radiology. Minimally invasive, image-guided procedures are performed through a small puncture instead of open surgery. Interventional radiologists use live imaging to treat conditions that once required a larger operation, which means less pain, smaller scars, and shorter recovery for patients who would otherwise travel out of the county for care.
- MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging). Detailed soft-tissue imaging of the brain, spine, and joints. MRI uses no radiation.
- Diagnostic Radiography (X-ray). Fast imaging of bones, chest, and joints.
- Multislice CT (Computed Tomography). Cross-sectional imaging used for trauma, abdominal pain, stroke, and cancer staging.
- Fluoroscopy. Real-time moving X-rays used to study swallowing, digestion, and joint function.
- Nuclear Medicine. Tracks organ function at the cellular level using a small amount of radioactive tracer.
- Ultrasound. Sound-wave imaging is used for the abdomen, thyroid, veins, and pregnancy. Ultrasound uses no radiation.
In addition to outpatient exams, the department handles imaging orders for admitted hospital patients and the Erlanger Western Carolina Emergency Department.

Erlanger Western Carolina Hospital's radiology team holds American College of Radiology accreditation in Digital Mammography and Ultrasound. Every ultrasound technologist is registered by the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography. Every radiologic technologist is certified through the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists.

Radiation Safety
Everyone is exposed to small amounts of radiation from the natural world every day. Imaging exams work the same way. MRI and ultrasound use no radiation at all. 3D mammography, diagnostic radiography, and CT scans use a low dose. Erlanger Western Carolina Hospital's equipment is built to produce diagnostic images at the lowest practical dose, which keeps the associated risk small. A stereotactic breast biopsy uses mammogram images to guide a needle to a suspicious area in the breast and remove a small tissue sample for testing. It replaces surgical biopsy for most patients and requires no incision and no general anesthesia.
Interventional radiology uses live imaging to guide instruments through a small puncture in the skin, allowing physicians to diagnose and treat conditions without open surgery.
