The University of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Medicine – Chattanooga, in partnership with Erlanger, is proud to announce the nomination of Alyssa Ferrell, DO, for the 2024 Alper Humanitarian Award. Dr. Ferrell is the nominee representing the department of internal medicine.

“Alyssa is one of our outpatient resident role models. She is enthusiastic, dedicated and cares deeply about her patients. It has been wonderful to see her develop strong relationships with her patients over the course of her residency, and to see those patients improve with her attentive care,” said Larry Curtis Cary, MD, Associate Professor of Internal Medicine and Pediatrics.

Dr. Ferrell is professional, thorough and has clearly gotten to know her patients personally over the course of her intern year. She understands the role of primary care in the healthcare system, and the importance of developing a relationship of trust. Alyssa has a sophisticated approach to generating a care plan that is sensitive to each patient's life circumstances, and is based on achieving reasonable goals over time.

Dr. Ferrell thrives when she has the opportunity to provide continuity of care to patients whom she has developed a relationship, which will serve her well in her future practice.

“I see the positive outcomes her approach can yield; her patients are more likely to attend appointments and adhere to their care plan. She is a leader in the clinic, and a resident who I assign complicated patients who need an attentive resident,” said Dr. Cary.

The University, in conjunction with the Erlanger Foundation, Erlanger, and an endowment from the family of the late Dr. Harold Alper, has established the yearly ceremony and grand rounds keynote address. The Alper Humanitarian Award is presented to a graduating resident or fellow at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Medicine – Chattanooga who has consistently demonstrated during residency or fellowship the humanistic qualities for which the late Dr. Alper was known: integrity, compassion, and community service.
