The AFib Center at Erlanger is the region’s only specialized treatment and training facility devoted solely to atrial fibrillation (AF or AFib). Our center not only offers the latest AF treatments such as catheter ablation, but also serves as an international training center, teaching physicians from around the world in cutting-edge procedures to treat heart rhythm disorders. Our goal is to provide comprehensive management of your atrial fibrillation and restore your quality of life.
What is Atrial Fibrillation (AFib or AF)?
AFib is an irregular, often rapid, heartbeat caused by chaotic electrical impulses in the upper chambers (atria) of the heart. It is the most common abnormal heart rhythm, affecting nearly 20% of people over age 70. Atrial fibrillation is often temporary, but some episodes won't end unless treated. Learn more about AFib.
Tests to Determine if You Have AFib
Your electrophysiologist may perform one or more of the following diagnostic tests to determine if you have AFib or a related heart rhythm disorder.
- Electrocardiogram (EKG) – A test that measures the electrical activity of the heart.
- Echocardiogram (echo) – A test that uses ultrasound waves to measure the pumping ability of the heart.
- A Holter monitor – This wearable EKG that provides a more complete picture of heart rhythm changes during the day. Learn more.
- A sleep study – An overnight sleep study may be needed to evaluate your heart and brain rhythms during sleep. Learn more.
Treating and Managing Your AFib
If it is determined you have AFib, one or a combination of the following treatments may be recommended for treatment. Other treatment options may be recommended depending on your unique situation.
- Anticoagulants – Blood thinners are often prescribed as a first step to reduce a patient's risk of stroke.
- Catheter Ablation – This minimally invasive procedure destroys tiny areas in the heart that are firing off abnormal electrical impulses. It often brings immediate relief for atrial fibrillation. Learn more.
- Anti-arrhythmic medications – Certain pharmaceuticals can help suppress abnormal heart rhythms.
- Closure device – Put in place through a minimally invasive procedure, this device seals off the heart’s left atrial appendage, where clots often form during atrial fibrillation.
- Lifestyle and Prevention - Following treatment, our team will also help you take preventive steps to avoid atrial fibrillation in the future.
