Program Structure

Overview

  • 12-Month Fellowship: The fellowship program is for one year. It provides a continuum of learning from orientation to advanced clinical responsibilities, in accordance with ASHA guidelines for Clinical Fellowship.
  • Benefits: Full-time at 37.5 hours, paid with benefits
  • Application Period: Begins January 1st with a deadline February 15th of the year of consideration
  • Application Requirements: Letter of Intent, Resume/CV, 3 Letters of Recommendation from Speech-Hearing Faculty and/or Clinical Instructors submitted via a single email to [email protected].
  • Candidacy: Candidates should possess a desire to obtain experience in speech-language pathology in adult acute care and demonstrate a strong academic performance. Applicants should be a Master’s candidate in Speech-Language Pathology with expected graduation date of spring or summer of the year applying and be eligible for Clinical Fellow Licensure in Tennessee.
  • Acceptance: One Clinical Fellow per 12-month rotation will be accepted following one or more interviews with the selection team. An offer letter and questionnaire will be sent to the accepted candidate. An acceptance letter and a completed questionnaire will be required to confirm the fellowship.
  • Fellowship Position Begins: Anticipated start date of summer/early fall pending registration for Clinical Fellowship in Speech Language Pathology with the Tennessee Board of Communication Disorders and receipt of provisional licensure

Rotations and Clinical Exposure

  • Core Rotations: Fellows will rotate through various acute care units such as neurology, cardiopulmonary, trauma, and medical/surgical units to gain diverse experience.
  • Patient experiences: Fellows will have patient experiences including, but not limited to post-stroke aphasia, dysarthria, cognitive-linguistic disorder, dysphagia (VFSS, FEES), TBI, tracheostomy/ventilator dependency, noninvasive ventilatory support, postsurgical inpatient care, care of critically ill patients, and multidisciplinary patient management.
  • Interdisciplinary Rounds: Fellows will regularly participate in rounds with multidisciplinary teams including physicians, residents, case managers, physical therapists, occupational therapists, and nurses to facilitate integrated care planning.
  • Multi-disciplinary Clinics: Fellows will rotate through Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) Clinic and Huntington’s Disease (HD) Clinic.
  • Rounds: Fellows will attend grand rounds, neuro case conferences, and multi-disciplinary rounds including neurology and trauma teams.
