The Erlanger Acute Care Physical Therapy Residency Program is designed to develop highly skilled clinicians who are prepared to meet the challenges of modern acute care practice. Through advanced clinical training, mentorship, evidence-based practice, interdisciplinary collaboration, and professional development opportunities, residents gain the knowledge, confidence, and clinical reasoning skills necessary to provide exceptional patient care in complex healthcare environments.
Throughout the program, residents enhance their ability to evaluate and manage patients across a broad spectrum of diagnoses and acuity levels, including critical illness, neurological conditions, orthopaedic injuries, cardiovascular disease, oncology, surgical recovery, and emergency care. The residency experience fosters growth in clinical expertise, leadership, teaching, research, and lifelong learning while supporting the development of advanced competencies outlined by the American Physical Therapy Association's core standards for residency education.
Graduates of the program are equipped to excel in fast-paced acute care settings, contribute to interdisciplinary teams, support evidence-based practice initiatives, and pursue continued professional advancement within the physical therapy profession.

Our first residency graduate is Cheryl Self, PT, DPT. Cheryl completed a case report titled “Treatment Strategies for the Pain Dominant Patient following Traumatic Injury” and led a journal club titled “Quadriceps Muscle Activity During Walking with a Knee Ankle Foot Orthosis is Associated with Improved Gait Ability in Acute Hemiplegic Stroke Patients with Severe Gait Disturbance by Hayashi et al.
