What Is Internal Medicine?
Internal medicine is a multi-system approach with a special focus on complex adult diseases. Internists provide a full range of primary care, from prevention to treatment of complex adult diseases such as hypertension, heart disease, diabetes, and high cholesterol. They take a multi-system approach to treating the whole person, sometimes in coordination with other specialists. Their extra training makes them an ideal choice for adults with unique health concerns or conditions requiring specialized care, or patients with multiple uncontrolled medical problems.
Internal Medicine residency training includes hospital services as staff physician, caring for outpatients. They also receive critical care training, and rotations in specialties like cardiology, endocrinology, and gastroenterology.
