Biography

Matthew Higgins, M.D., is a fellowship-trained orthopaedic surgeon at Erlanger Orthopaedics. He specializes in treating patients with joint pain related to osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, post-traumatic arthritis, or avascular necrosis, as well as patients who've had problems with previous joint replacements. Dr. Higgins offers both conservative treatment through medications, activity modification, injections, therapy, and braces – and the latest minimally-invasive procedures if non-surgical therapies fail to provide relief.

Dr. Higgins is fellowship trained in primary joint replacements and complex revisions of previous joint replacements. While in his fellowship, he also received training in direct anterior hip replacement. This minimally invasive technique allows the surgeon repair the painful hip through a natural space between the muscles – without the need to cut tissue or detach tendons.

In addition to his medical practice, Dr. Higgins serves as a clinical instructor for the orthopaedic residency program for the UT College of Medicine in Chattanooga.
