About / Overview

Dr. Juan Goyanes is a bilingual board-certified and epilepsy fellowship-trained neurologist. He is originally from Venezuela where he graduated from medical school at the Central Western Lisandro Alvarado University in Barquisimeto-Venezuela. He worked as a research fellow at the Peritz-Scheinberg Cerebral Vascular Disease Research Laboratory at the University of Miami. Dr. Goyanes completed his adult neurology residency at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) in Memphis, where he had a broad exposure to acute stroke and management of neurological emergencies in one of the busiest stroke centers in the country. During his residency, Dr. Goyanes served as Chief Resident in his last year and was awarded Resident Research Scholar of the Year. Then, he completed a fellowship in epilepsy at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. 

Dr. Goyanes returned to Memphis as an assistant professor of neurology, working as a neurohospitalist and epileptologist at Baptist Memorial Hospital, Methodist University Hospital, and Regional One Health. He developed an EEG-Epilepsy curriculum to improve learning for neurology residents and was given the Teaching Faculty Award. 

Dr. Goyanes was recruited by Erlanger Neurology/ UTHSC-Chattanooga Campus in 2025, where he works as a neurohospitalist and epileptologist, helping with their new neurology residency program. He also sees patients with epilepsy at Erlanger Neurology Clinic, where he provides care in English and Spanish. 

His clinical areas of interest include acute stroke management with thrombolytics, diagnostic evaluation of stroke etiology, status epilepticus, ICU EEG, post-stroke epilepsy, drug-resistant epilepsy, women’s health in epilepsy, EMU, presurgical epilepsy evaluations/referrals, and neuromodulatory therapies in epilepsy. 

 When he is not working, Dr. Goyanes enjoys spending time with his wife and three children, traveling, outdoor activities, building Legos, and watching soccer games, movies, and series.
