About / Overview

Dr. Portera has 22 years of experience in medicine and joined WISH in 1997. He studied biology at Ole Miss, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in 1984. He received his MD from Albany Medical College and completed his residency at the University of Tennessee in Memphis, specializing in Obstetrics and Gynecology. He completed his fellowship training at the University of Tennessee in uro-gynecology and reconstructive pelvic surgery. He is a member of the American Urogynecologic Society.

Since joining Women's Institute for Specialized Health, Dr. Portera has become a proud member of the Chattanooga community. He, his wife and their twins live on Signal Mountain, and they enjoy golf, hunting, fishing, and sports. Dr. Portera served as Director of the Continence Center at Memorial Hospital. His specialty focus is on difficult surgical problems including incontinence and vaginal prolapse, in addition to a wider range of medical care.
