The Erlanger Heart and Lung Institute
A regional center for complex cardiovascular care
Erlanger is a regional referral center for complex cardiovascular care. This means physicians from a four-state service area refer and transfer patients to us for specialized care and the latest technology. It means our cardiology center stands apart in a number of important ways:
- We’re Academic. Erlanger is the region’s only academic cardiovascular disease program – teaching cardiology fellows from around the country as well as students and residents here in our region. Our physicians are well-versed in the latest heart treatments, technologies and innovations to treat patients and educate cardiologists for the future. As an academic system, we develop new therapies, offer clinical trials and conduct research that improves lives.
- We’re Innovative. Erlanger is doing things that aren’t being done at other hospitals in our region – like teaching new heart rhythm procedures to doctors internationally, offering advanced therapies from the region’s only board-certified heart failure doctors, and helping people stay heart-healthy through dedicated prevention services. We offer full-service cardiovascular care from preventing heart disease to treating complex disorders.
- We’re Evidence-based. Erlanger takes a systematic approach to clinical problem solving, integrating the best available research with clinical expertise and patient values. We pride ourselves in adherence to guideline-directed evaluation and management with a strong commitment to safety and quality.
- We’re Team-based. The heart has many facets – electrical, structural, vascular, and genetic. So it makes sense that treating heart problems also needs to be multidimensional. Our program is built around a collaborative team of cardiologists representing general cardiology and a full range of cardiac subspecialties as well as nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses, pharmacists, dieticians, and exercise physiologists. We have assembled the best team to provide optimal cardiovascular health for our patients. Our team also works closely with primary care physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants and other referring providers to make sure care is coordinated.
A Collaboration for Better Care
Erlanger is elevating the scope and quality of heart care in the southeast by collaborating with one of the top cardiology programs in the country - Columbia University Medical Center. Through Columbia’s HeartSource program, our two cardiovascular teams share clinical data to make better decisions, improve outcomes and continually perfect overall cardiovascular performance.
