LIFE FORCE Air Medical


Life Force is comprised of three major divisions; Air Medical (Life Force Medical Crew), Communications Center (Life Force Dispatch and MedComm), and Med-Trans Corporation (Providing Aviation Assets, Pilots and Mechanics).  Each group contributes to the mission of providing safe, comprehensive, effective, and compassionate patient care and delivering superior customer service through service excellence and innovation. LIFE FORCE is a regional resource for East Tennessee, North Georgia, Northeast Alabama, and Western North Carolina. 


LIFE FORCE serves patients who have suffered any kind of severe trauma or burn, as well as severe medical illnesses.  Each aircraft has equipment and the trained staff to care for people in all stages of life, from infants to geriatrics.  LIFE FORCE may also be utilized in some situations, in search and rescue missions.

On-Scene and In-Flight Life-Saving Treatment Includes:

Trauma Service

  • Four units of blood carried on each flight 
  • On-scene surgical procedures and invasive circulatory intervention including surgical airways, chest tubes, central lines, saphenous vein cut downs. 
  • In-flight I-stat laboratory analysis and surgical preparations

Heart & Stroke Intervention

  • Aggressive cardiac and stroke protocols 
  • Ground-breaking cardiac drugs

Cutting Edge Pediatric Care

  • Specialized pediatric protocols and medications 
  • Dedicated neonatal transport team

Labor & Delivery

  • High-risk obstetric care 
  • In-flight fetal monitoring system including TOCO and ultracound 
  • Specialized OB medications

UT College of Medicine

  • Professors/physicians provide on-going training and advanced in-flight protocols which speed direct admissions to surgery, the cardiac catheterization lab, radiology and much more …



LIFE FORCE 1 - Main Base (located at the Baroness Campus)

LIFE FORCE 1 began operations in December 1988 with one aircraft averaging over 700 flights per year.

LIFE FORCE 2 - Sparta Base

Sparta Base, located approximately five miles north of Sparta, Tennessee at the Upper Cumberland Regional Airport, is a satellite site for LIFE FORCE 2 .  The second aircraft was added in 1995 to help serve the Cumberland region communities better and to improve the odds in the race against time during the "The Golden Hour."   LIFE FORCE 2 is "launched" by the Communications Center at Erlanger Base where the aircraft can also be tracked by the Communications Specialist.  Every resource that is available to Erlanger's aircraft and crew is also available to the Sparta Base aircraft and crew.

LIFE FORCE 3 - Calhoun Base

On February 12, 2007, LIFE FOCE 3, based at the Tom B. David Airport in Calhoun, Georgia, completed its first patient transport to Erlanger’s Baroness Campus in Chattanooga, Tennessee. As Erlanger’s service area expanded in the highly populated North Georgia region, Erlanger added its third aircraft to help serve the North Georgia communities better and to improve the odds in the race against time during the “Golden Hour.” As is with LIFE FORCE 1 and 2, LIFE FORCE 3 is “launched” by the Communications Center at the Erlanger base where the aircraft can also be tracked by the communications specialists. Every resource that is available to Erlanger’s aircraft and crew is also available to the Calhoun base aircraft and crews.

LIFE FORCE 4 - Blue Ridge Base

LIFE FORCE 4 was placed in service in the Blue Ridge, Georgia area in October 2010 to help better serve the Northeast Georgia, Southeast Tennessee and Wester North Carolina communities.

LIFE FORCE 5 - Winchester Base

LIFE FORCE 5 was placed in service in Winchester, TN in August 2015. This fifth base helps LIFE FORCE form a complete circle of operation around it's headquarters at Erlanger University Hospital.
