The staff at the Erlanger Pulmonary Disease Management Program – Frederic D. Seifer, M.D., FCCP, and Brenda Spurbeck, MSN, APN-C – specializes in the treatment of chronic respiratory diseases though proactive disease management, partnering with patients for customized intervention. Dr. Seifer is board-certified in internal and pulmonary medicine and Ms. Spurbeck is a certified advanced practice nurse.

“The patient and the healthcare team form a partnership in which goals and expectations are clearly defined and met by both,” states Dr. Seifer. After receiving his medical degree from Northwestern University Medical School and completing his internship and residency at the University of Illinois in Chicago, Dr. Seifer completed his pulmonary fellowship at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina.

The pulmonary disease management program includes in-depth disease specific education and patient empowerment, tobacco intervention, and skills and exercise training through pulmonary rehabilitation. “Dr. Seifer and I work as a team, focusing on lifestyle modification for the treatment and prevention of pulmonary disease,” says Ms. Spurbeck. Ms. Spurbeck graduated cum laude from Saginaw Valley State University in Saginaw, Michigan, with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and went on to earn a Masters of Science in Nursing from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. In addition to being a licensed advanced practice nurse, Ms. Spurbeck is certified as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner.

For patients diagnosed with chronic lung disease, outpatient pulmonary rehabilitation is available at two locations: The Chattanooga LifeStyle Center, located in downtown Chattanooga on Market Street, and the Erlanger North Campus in Red Bank. Multiple sessions during the week combine exercise, nutrition, disease management training and counseling – all monitored by a multi-disciplinary team of healthcare professionals including Dr. Seifer and Ms. Spurbeck, a team of nurses, respiratory therapists, pharmacists and a dietitian.

With the multi-faceted exercise program, patients improve endurance and controlled breathing, working toward goals with the emotional and social support of team members and fellow patients. Education is integral to the program; the pulmonary rehabilitation team focuses on helping patients – and their families – achieve a better understanding of what it takes to adapt, improvise and overcome their pulmonary impairment.
