The Tennessee Craniofacial Center (TCC) specializes in the evaluation and treatment of patients of all ages with craniofacial deformities. Its services cover a broad range of reconstructive operations for the treatment of deformities of the face and skull resulting from birth defects, tumors, and trauma.

Some examples of frequently treated problems include: cleft lip, cleft palate, microtia, craniosynostosis, hemifacial microsomia, orbital hypertelorism, Treacher Collins Syndrome, Crouzon Syndrome, Apert Syndrome, Pierre Robin Sequence, and craniomaxillofacial trauma.

Children who are seen through the Craniofacial Center are treated by an experienced Team of professionals led by Medical Director, Larry A. Sargent, M.D. Other disciplines represented on the team include:

  • Neurosurgery
  • Ophthalmology
  • Pediatric Dentistry
  • Orthodontics
  • Otolaryngology
  • Anesthesiology
  • Pediatrics
  • Speech Pathology
  • Audiology
  • Psychology
  • Social Services
  • Genetics
  • Clinical Coordinator

This specialized Center promotes a multidisciplinary/interdisciplinary team approach to help ensure that the patient is evaluated and treated in a coordinated manner and that all their needs are met. The Team combines the expertise of each specialist to diagnose and formulate a coordinated, comprehensive treatment plan. This is followed by execution of the treatment plan at the appropriate time to provide a high level of comprehensive care to our patients. The TCC also works with all the pediatric sub-specialists at Children’s Hospital at Erlanger. Some frequently used specialties include: genetics, ophthalmology, feeding therapy, neurology, cardiology, pulmonology, and gastroenterology.

The TCC Coordinator begins scheduling families for pre-birth education as deformities are detected on ultrasound exams. The children are followed by the Team at the TCC for years and sometimes on into their adult years. The TCC provides education and coordination of treatment through every aspect of their care.
