Erlanger’s bariatric surgery program provides comprehensive, state-of-the art
surgical care for those who are 100 pounds or more overweight and/or have health
conditions related to obesity. Our goal is to help you achieve lasting lifestyle
changes by offering emotional, nutritional, and medical support throughout your
weight loss—and maintenance—program. This comprehensive program, tailored
specifically to meet your needs, provides long-term follow-up, nutritional,
psychological, and exercise support.
Dr. Chris Sanborn will be among those discussing Erlanger’s bariatric surgery
program. Using a team approach to achieving weight loss, Dr. Sanborn and the
Chattanooga Lifestyle Center staff will discuss how their surgical weight loss
program can help increase your ability to move, improve your self-esteem and,
most importantly, extend your life. Their goal is to help reverse or
significantly improve the medical complications of life-threatening
obesity—including diabetes, hypertension, arthritis, infertility, and
depression. Feel free to bring family members, friends, and your questions so
that we will be better able to help you start your journey towards a healthier,
happier life.

Achieve lasting lifestyle change with emotional, nutritional, and medical
support during and after weight loss treatment
Obesity is a complex condition involving one’s eating habits, physical
activity levels, heredity and socio-cultural norms. It can also lead to many
life-threatening health problems, such as heart or lung disease, type 2
diabetes, sleep apnea, asthma, GERD, joint degeneration, hypertension, and many
types of cancer. To achieve positive, life-long outcomes, Erlanger offers a

For best results in any weight management program, people need to actively
participate in a multi-disciplinary program which includes nutritional,
emotional and exercise counseling.
Erlanger’s surgical weight
loss program, as with its medical weight loss program, involves a team
approach to help with psychological, nutritional and medical issues before and
after surgery. Team members lead ongoing support group meetings, exercise
programs, counseling, and nutritional guidance at the Chattanooga Lifestyle
Center.
Nutritional Evaluations A pre-surgery nutritional
evaluation, conducted by a dietitian, reviews previous and current eating
habits, as well as past weight loss successes and failures. Education about
one’s diet after surgery will also be addressed, as well as tips for shopping
smart, eating out, and planning meals.
Support Group The Bariatric Support
Group is an open meeting held each Monday at 5:30 p.m. at the
Chattanooga Lifestyle Center. The format includes group discussion
or a presentation by a guest speaker or staff member on a topic of interest
to bariatric patients. The group is open to new and established patients and
spouses and friends are welcomed and encouraged to attend.
Exercise Program Exercise is a key component to any
weight loss program and Erlanger’s degreed exercise physiologist and nurses will
devise a customized exercise plan for before and after bariatric surgery.
Participants will be scheduled for an initial evaluation to assess any special
needs and to establish an individualized exercise routine. Daily progress
towards exercise goals will be recorded, as well as one’s heart rate and blood
pressure response.
The gym at the Chattanooga Lifestyle Center is medically supervised in a
comfortable environment set up to meet each individual’s special needs.
