Leapfrog Group Patient Safety Ratings

Erlanger voluntarily provides information regarding our adherence to the following patient safety categories reported by The Leapfrog Group. The four possible progress measures are: "Willing to Report", "Some Progress", "Substantial Progress", and "Fully Meets Standards". Page updated: October, 2008.

Safety Standard

Progress Toward Meeting Standard

Prevent Medication Errors Willing to Report
This measure reflects the usage of computerized prescriber order entry (CPOE) systems to order medications, tests, and procedures. CPOE systems are computer systems designed to alert doctors and other prescribers to potentially serious problems with their instructions.
Appropriate ICU Staffing Fully Meet Standards
This measure shows that the hospital has an intensive care unit (ICU) that is staffed by doctors and other caregivers who have special training in critical care medicine. These doctors are called "intensivists".
Steps to Avoid Harm Substantial Progress
This measure shows the degree to which a hospital has put in place procedures to reduce 13 common, preventable medical mistakes.
Reduce Pressure Ulcers Substantial Progress
This measure shows that a small number of patients develop bed sores (pressure ulcers) during their hospital stay. Bed sores are breakdowns in the skin caused by pressure that can result in infection, pain, and disability.
Reduce In-Hospital Injuries Some Progress
This measure shows the degree to which a hospital has a small number of patients that are injured during their hospital stay. Possible injuries include falls, fractures, and burns.
Managing Serious Errors Fully Meet Standards
This measure shows the degree to which a hospital has implemented Leapfrog's policy on managing serious events (or "never events") such as surgery on the wrong body part or death due to contaminated drugs or devices.
